Defining a least restrictive environment
|
A Least Restrictive Environment or LRE is the "most typical and standard educational environment that can reasonably meet the needs of a student with a disability" (Ormrod, 2014, p. 131). The above definition of a least restrictive environment is most commonly used among Special Education teachers and professionals. In terms of Deaf Education, the definition of a least restrictive environment is reversed. A Least Restrictive Environment for a d/Deaf student would be an educational environment in which the student is able to easily communicate and fit in with the school community. If you flip the triangle found in the link below upside down, it would show the LRE spectrum for a d/Deaf student. |
